Best Digital Camera Memory Card
By petersimon
If you own a digital camera - you'll need a camera memory card. The average camera comes with enough memory to store a lot less than most of us would like - which is why it's advisable to purchase at least some extra media storage space.
Generally they're an inexpensive purchase, which is in part due to the amount of competition. Of late, a host of SDHC memory cards have appeared on the market - this due to the higher resolution (mega-pixels) that's now appearing as technological advances in modern media devices wears on.
The five best memory cards for digital cameras are featured below. They're all on the best sellers list, give great value for money and possess plenty of positive feedback from previous purchases. If you're about to go on a trip with your underwater camera - don't wait to start snapping that stunning undersea vista without an SDHC card on board!
Transcend 4 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS4GSDHC6E
This is the best selling digital camera memory card - and will set you back less than 7 bucks. At 4 gigs there's enough storage to hold a decent collection of images and videos and though the brand isn't (yet) as trusted as say Sandisk - it's definitely becoming a worthy competitor.
Transcend do a range of cards - this one plus an 8, 16 and 32 GB size. The one you want depends on how much use you'll putting your camera through but they all have the same basic foundations: the on-board technology is driven by SDHC and they'll work with all SDHC-labeled units. The transfer rate is speedy enough but if you've got anything from 10 mp up - aim for a larger memory card. Price plus function plus storage capacity add up. Good enough for a first use card.
Kingston 4 GB Class 4 SDHC Flash Memory Card SD4/4GBET
ANother best selling digital memory card, this time from Kingston. Unlike the previous product, this one's a Class 4 - so it's not the best choice if you have anything in the digital SLR range, as it's simply not up to the same level of technology. Both the camera and card need to match each other's performance as a means of achieving the best results - and it's not much more for a Class 6 card.
That said, for what it is and what it does it's suitable and houses everything a 4 gig card should do - works with any SDHC device, the transfer speed is good enough for a range of uses - MP3 players and net-books to name but two and it's fair with video footage, providing you're not in the running to become the next biggest film director. It's cheap, it will store more images than you're ever likely to need - and it does the job.
Sandisk 4GB Secure Digital SD HC Memory Card
This is the best selling digital memory card from Sandisk - and in case you're wondering, it's a Class 2. It's good enough for the average happy snapper, though there isn't enough speed to the transfer rate for anyone that has more serious intentions in mind. The buffer rate will feel sluggish is you ask too much of it though it's en extremely reliable card overall.
Again - its an SDHC card, so make sure that your camera (or whatever else you're buying it for) is compatible. Just look for the SDHC acronym - if it's there, you're fine. If it's not, you need to buy the SD type. It's capacity for storing images etc is good enough and it handles video media without any real issues - though again, if you're wanting to shoot moving images, you might find the speed an issue.
Transcend 32 GB Ultimate Speed SDHC Class 10 Flash Memory Card TS32GSDHC10
This is the best selling Class 10 digital memory card - which means that besides the whopping storage capacity, it can transfer digital imagery with a level of speed that's pretty impressive. If you're a bit more ambitious than the average user, it's a great alternative to the highly expensive Sandisk Extreme III - the difference being that the Sandisk is the superior card in terms of transfer speeds.
But you get what you pay for and most folks back off at the thought of parting with 170 bucks. The Transcend is a great value for money alternative. It is fast, it does store a mind boggling amount of media and the price you pay for what you don't get (in comparison to the Extreme) is the trade off - in short, for around 55 dollars you're getting a pretty awesome bang for your buck.
Transcend 8 GB Class 6 SDHC Flash Memory Card TS8GSDHC6
This is the best digital camera memory card that sits round about the middle range. With 8 gigs you're getting a healthy storage capacity and the fact that its a Class 6 card means that there's enough read/write speed to keep most avid snappers plenty happy. It's stable and reliable when transferring and will store so many images that you'll probably forget that you took them.
If you own a camera that's a minimum of 10 mp's this is the standard you need to purchase. Anything less (in terms of class) won't be good enough to cope with the resolution and speed. Higher mega-pixels simply means a higher image resolution - which translates as meaning you require more storage per file. It's a great memory card for the price, fast enough, big enough and well worth investing in.
